A fireworks explosion ahead of a Fourth of July celebration at a Cape Cod country club prompted state fire investigators to respond to the scene Wednesday evening.

The Massachusetts Division of Fire Services deployed code compliance officers and State Police fire investigators to the New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee after a “possible fireworks discharge,” according to a spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal.

The spokesperson had no further information as of 6 p.m.

Local news outlets on Cape Cod reported that the fireworks exploded near a golf course maintenance area at the country club, injuring several people. The explosion was reported around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon.

“Mashpee Fire Department and ‘all available manpower’ were requested at the scene, per dispatch reports,” the Enterprise of Mashpee reported. “A MedFlight helicopter was requested for at least two parties.”

A pre- Fourth of July BBQ and fireworks show had been scheduled at the country club, with the colorful display set to go off around 9 p.m.

Photos and videos circulating on social media showed a massive smoke plume rising into the sky. People near the scene reported they heard loud bangs before the dark cloud appeared.

The Mashpee Police Department did not comment Wednesday evening, amid the ongoing investigation.
